Description
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the inspirational poem Amazing Grace, written by clergyman and English poet John Newton. The hymn was published four years later.
I wrote this new setting of the well known hymn, composed for award-winning Newcastle based choir ‘Voices of Hope‘ as a thank you for their support, encouragement and inspiration to me this last few years. After the opening verse with optional soloists, the new melody is sung by different combinations of voices within the choir, supported by a flowing and accessible piano accompaniment. There are subtle hints of the original tune woven into the texture before it is presented in all it’s glory a cappella. The piece returns to the new melody for the final verses to close.

“Really beautiful. Thanks so much for writing something so utterly lush!” Kathryn Davidson (Choir Director)
“I’m not a great fan of the original, so was a lovely surprise to hear your version – fresh, but retaining the soul of it” Chris Kilsby
“What an effective composition – it shows off several solo voices, explores a wide variety of different textures and really allows you to explore sheer beauty of sound and balance”. John Powell (adjudicator)
